Bordeaux Art Deco Building 10: House, 1 Rue Gourgues et Marsaud

1 Rue Gourgues et Marsaud, a modest Art Deco residence.

There are many modest, yet fine Art Deco houses along the Rue Gourgues et Marsaud including this bungalow with its three relief carvings of flower arrangements, fluting and jaunty porthole window and metal grate.

The second example from Rue Gourgues et Marsaud has not only flowers, found atop the second-storey windows, but has many other fine details, including the hexagonal frames of the windows and doors. The upside down triangle and wave motifs are exceptional.

Bordeaux Art Deco Building 12: Au Carnaval

The brightly decorated exterior of Au Carnaval.

Located at 2 Cours Pasteur, Au Carnaval is a small, vividly decorated boutique dedicated to costumes and disguise. It was built almost a hundred years ago, in 1927, and while no longer run by the same people, it has remained in the same business. The current management has been there selling costumes for over 30 years. Bright and colourful orange and green tiles, set with stepping-in, balance mosaics of masks and lettering, while along the top the shop’s name is spelt out in an Art Deco typeface.

Former Magasin Eurodif.

This company was taken over and no longer here, but the building has some fine Art Deco details, and a fantastic orange and cream facing stone. Decorative octagons highlight the band that separates the ground and first floors. It also has excellent iron gates.

Bordeaux Art Deco Building 15: Manufacture des Chaussures Exportation

Former Shoe Manufacturers for Export.

This former shoe making premises at 9-13 Ave D’Ares has many fine features including the lettering across the top, and the carved octagonal medallions under the upper windows. The showpiece is the relief mural set into the upper centre of the stepped in entrance. This depicts a row of flowers below sunrays which fade into clouds formed of spirals at the top. The building was recently converted into residential apartments.

Bordeaux Art Deco Building 17: Photo Florian

Photo Florian.

Though undecorated the use of large, sans serif letters to spell out Photo Florian, combined with its linear simplicity, mark it as Art Deco period. It is located at the corner of Rue Charles Nancel-Penard and Rue Edmond Michelet.
