Brighton Kiosk

A projecting roof provides shelter

This former bus shelter and convenience store in Brighton is now used as a little kiosk coffee shop for the adjacent park. It has a distinctive Art Deco curve that runs from the broad roof down through the windows and the building itself. Somehow it appears to have retained its original metal window frames. It is located halfway between the Royal Pavilion and Brighton Beach.

Rua Pedro Álvares Cabral, Alvor

The parapet is modest gem

This is a small, two storey building in the Portuguese seaside town of Alvor. Alas, only the upper floor maintains the original Art Deco form, in particular the parapet which comes replete with steps, massings and horizontal bars tricked out in blue. Pedro Álvares Cabral was a Portuguese nobleman, military commander, navigator and explorer regarded as the European discoverer of Brazil.

A traditional, orange, ceramic roof sits behind the parapet

Websters Bar, Sydney

A stylish corner bar

This building is currently the home of Websters Bar, a three storey building on a corner lot at 323 King Street in Newtown, Sydney. Probably constructed in the the 1930s, it features wonderful, winged motifs. There’s a chance that it was a bit more colourful in its original incarnation but the black, white and grey has been skillfully applied here to highlight the decorative features. Thanks again to Keith Barrett for providing these photos.

White Tower, Albany

Clean lines and pleasing design.

Formerly part of the nationwide White Tower Hamburger chain founded in 1926, this one in the city of Albany, the state capital of New York, had been a dance hall and nightclub from the 1980s. Since the 1990s it had been called the Fuze Box and was home to Punk and Hard Rock. Located on Central Avenue, it is a compact mix of streamline and skyscraper looks. Well proportioned and well coloured, with chrome strips for detail, it closed in March 2020 because of the pandemic and its owners put it up for sale in August 2020.

With a mini setback skyscraper on the top.
